He was admitted by the Supreme Court of Victoria as a barrister and solicitor in 1915. After brief employment as a lawyer Foenander worked as a tutor at Ormond College. In 1920 he was appointed part-time lecturer in European History and also in Political Economy, and in 1925 he was a part-time lecturer in Economics in the new Commerce Faculty. In 1947 Foenander was appointed Senior Lecturer in Industrial Relations and six years later became Associate Professor of Commerce. He is best known as the author of numerous works on industrial relations and retired from full-time teaching in 1957 and part-time teaching in 1969.
