Agent TypeOrganisationActivities & OccupationsManufacturers, organsHistoryStephen James Laurie 1914-2006, was born in Harrow, Middlesex and apprentices to a leading London organbuilding firm, the John Crompton Organ Company Ltd, Acton from 1931-1936. After gaining considerable experience, he left he company in 1937 to work for the Hammond Company. Arriving in Melbourne in 1948, he worked on a part time and then full time basis as a voicer for the Melbourne firm of George Fincham & Sons Pty Ltd, 1953-1957. Stephen Laurie & Co. began in November 1957 and in 1961 the firm became Davis & Laurie Pty Ltd when Keith Davis joined Steve Laurie in partnership. His initial factory was in Roberna Street, Moorabbin and then from 1982 in White Street Mordialloc. The firm closed in 1999 at the time of his retirement although the name continues with a firm owned by a former employee.
