In 1917 he served on the State Brown Coal Advisory Committee. Stone was also a member of the Engineering Faculty, researching in a number of fields, including lubrication, radiology and wireless transmission. He was also renowned for his experiments with X-rays, assisting H.J. Grayson in the design of machines to produce diffraction gratings and micro-rulings, and assisting A.G.M. Michell to produce his crankless engine. William Stone died in 1949.
