He taught at several rural school and at the Lee St School, Carlton before his appointment as lecturer in history and master of method at Melbourne Teachers' College (1913-35). During this time he was twice awarded the Harbison- Higginbothom Research Scholarship at the University of Melbourne where he graduated MA LittD. His first publications were 'The Constitutional Development of Victoria, 1851-6' (1920), and 'The History of State Education in Victoria, Part I' (1922). Sweetman's most important work however was 'Australian Constitutional Development' (1925). A pioneering book it contains 100 pages of appendices which reproduce important documents, depatches and letters for the first time. On his retirement from the MTC in 1935 he published 'History of Melbourne Teachers' College and its Predecessors' (1939) and 'The Educational Activities in Victoria of the Rt. Hon HCE Childers' (1940). At this time he also completed his doctorate at the University of London. Known for his wit, scholarship and kindness, 'Dr Sweetie' died in Melbourne 19 June 1966
