After studying at University High School, he gained experience as a junior draftsman in the office of an architect. In 1907 he spent time in China overseeing a building project in Canton (Guangzhou) for the noted Australian architect, A.W. Purnell, before continuing on a working tour of the world. In 1914 he entered into partnership with Walter A. Drummond and accepted a part-time position as assistant lecturer at the University of Melbourne. He was appointed Lecturer in Architecture in 1920 and Dean of the Faculty in 1938. He was foundation chairman of the Town and Country Planning Board in 1946 and was awarded the Sir James Barrett medal in 1959 for his contribution to town planning. He died in 1978.
