After working with the Victorian Government they started a riverboat service on the Murray in 1865 and also planted vines on the river flats. This venture failed but in 1869 Smith made a more successful attempt and selected 150 acres at Wahgunyah that subsequently became "All Saints" winery. The family were also active in municipal and sporting matters, notably horseracing. In 1989 "All Saints" was taken over by an Adelaide based consortium. The company announced in 1991 that it was in receivership and in 1992 was acquired by Brown Bros. Milawa Vineyard Pty. Ltd.
