It was the beginning of a vast chain of country and suburban retail shops. Concurrently Giplin ran his own road transport system of 20 tracks. Gilpin died in 1942 and the business of 94 stores was taken over by his son Oliver Gilpin Junior. Two years later the controlling interest was acquired by Foy and Gibson Pty Ltd.
