In 1913 the firm as shipping agents imported petroleum (motor spirit) for a client who was unable to pay for the goods. This lead to their marketing the petroleum in Australia, this later developed as a major arm of the business. Sleigh's was the first company in Australia to market petroleum from 'kerbside' stations beginning in the 1920s. In 1947 the company's petroleum devision was incorporated as Golden Fleece Petroleum Limited, obtaining necessary funding for expansion from Caltex initially as long term loans but later converted to shares. In 1981 H.C. Sleigh sold its interests in Golden Fleece to Caltex.
