She attended Essendon High School and won a scholarship to Melbourne University for 1929. While there studying Arts, she joined the Melbourne University Labor Club in 1932 and became a member of the Communist Party in April of that year. She became active organising among the unemployed in the depression and commenced a life long commitment to organising and working as an official in many CPA related organisations. During the second world war she became joint Secretary of the Party in South Australia, one of the first women secretaries in the CPA. Her involvement lasted until the Party wound up in 1991.
