While there he was active in the Labor Club and joined the University branch of the Communist Party of Australia c1941 during its period of illegality. He graduated in 1947 with other prominent Labor Club members, Stephen Murray-Smith and Geoff Serle. His career as a journalist was initially hampered by his communist sympathies but he eventually worked for the 'Perth Daily News', 'Australian', 'Nation', 'Bulletin' and spent six years in New York with 'Business International'. He left the Communist Party in 1956 after revelations of Stalin's terror.
