Thomson, Scottish-born, was in turn a chorister at St. Mary's Cathedral, Edinburgh and an organist and choirmaster before studying at the University of Edinburgh, the Raff Conservatorium, FRankfurt, the Hochschule, Berlin, and in Vienna. On returning to in 1896 he became critic for the "Magazine of Music" London. In 1899 he came to Austalia, and in 1902 became a Piano Chief Study teacher at the University Conservatorium. He was soon examining for the newly-formed University Conservatorium Examination Board, travelling through Victoria and, from late 1903, Tasmania. In 1905 he was appointed Secretary and Organizer for the Board.
