In 1946 he was appointed Research Professor of Metallurgy and from 1957-1959 was Dean of Applied Science. In 1960 he was appointed to a Personal Chair, retiring in 1964. In 1962 Greenwood participated in the Royal Commission to enquire into the failure of King's Bridge, Melbourne. He died in 1981.
