He worked as an engineer for Metropolitan Vickers Electricity Company, EMF Electrical Company and the Electrical Department at Swinburne Technical College. In 1929 he was employed by the State Electricity Commission, where he remained until 1961. During the Second World War, Thorn worked for the Minister of Munitions. In 1962 he became research Director for Bruce Peebles Pty. Ltd. until his appointment as consulting engineer for John Connell-Mott Hay & Anderson in 1969. Thorn was a long term member of the Melb. Univ. Grad. Committee and Engineering Fac. He died in 1983.
