As a student Gregory was a member of the S.R.C. and Melbourne representative in the National Union of Australian Students. He was a member of the student delegation visiting Indonesia in December 1956 - February 1957. He was Master of Ormond College from 1 August 1990 until 1993. and wrote the history of the Royal Melbourne Hospital, published in 1998, and of Melbourne High School, published in 2005.
