He married Mabel Kelly in 1909, and in 1910 bought Miegunyah, Orrong Road, comprising a house and garden which the Grimwades extended and developed, the formed containing furniture made by Grimwade, who loved both the craft and timber. In 1920 he published "An Anthography of the Eucalypts (A. & R.). A philanthropist during his life-time, he and his widow left Miegunyah to the University.
