He served as member and president on the Board of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (WEHI) and prominent in numerous bodies concerned with promoting the arts: Deputy Chairman of the Art Foundation of Victoria, President and Trustee of the National Gallery of Victoria and Trustee of the Victorian Arts, founder committee member of the Council for the Order of Australia and the Australia Fund and other organisations. He was a founder and shareholder in Certified Australian Angus Beef Pty Ltd (CAAB) from 1996 until his retirement at the end of 2005.
