Educated at Geelong College and Longrenong Agricultural College, Grimwade lived and worked in various parts of rural Victoria. He served with the 20th Motor Regiment from 1939 to 1943. On his return, Grimwade was the liberal candidate at the 1945 general election and was the M.L.A. for Goulburn, Victoria from 1947 to 1950.
