Both became defunct in 1986. It was funded through the affiliation fees of thirty-eight left-wing unions, with additional funds from the Department of Labour and Industry. It provided support and information to the unemployed, and researched and lobbied for the creation of new jobs. It had links with shop stewards committees, the ALP, and other left-wing and Western Region organisations. The main centre operated at the Trades Hall Council under Peter Green.
