He started his political and union activism as a research officer for the Combined Unions Shop Committee at the Williamstown Naval Dockyard and as a member of the ALP in the late 1960s. In early 1970 he was the Industrial Co-ordinator for the Victorian Executive of the Victorian Branch of the ALP, and later that year actively involved in opposition to the intervention of the Federal ALP Executive into the Branch. His activism in the 1960s and 1970s ranged from the anti-Vietnam war movement to the anti-penal clauses campaign.
