He then served at Gallipoli and was one of the first to be wounded and invalided home. On his return in 1915, he joined a flying unit. In 1928 Haig was appointed Aviation Manager for the Vacuum Oil Company, later Mobil and arranged most of Charles Kingford Smith's flights. Regarded as a pioneer in the aviation industry, Fred Haig retired in 1959.
