By 1935 she was matron at the Protestant Orphanage in Geelong and matron at Carey Grammar School from 1936 to 1939. Sister Hamilton completed a course on infant welfare work in 1940 and subsequently attended clinics at the Queen Victoria Hospital and Womens' Hospital. In 1945 Hamilton was sister-in-charge at the Wonthaggi Baby Health Centre where she remained until her retirement in 1956. Under the pseudonym "Autre Droit", Doris Hamilton wrote a controversial book about conditions in hospitals.
