He was in turn Demonstrator and Senior Demonstrator in Botany there but in August 1938 took up an appointment to the University of Melbourne Chair of Botany, following the retirement of A.J. Ewart. Among his major projects were research into the tropic-proofing of optical instruments by a fungicide during World War II, on pencillin and on the physiological processes of plant respiration and fermentation.
