The last meeting of the Professional Board was held on the 5th of June 1978, with the first meeting of the Academic Board taking place on the 6th July 1978. Renaming the board was to reflect statute amendments allowing members of academic staff other than professors to become Heads of Department. By the time of its name change on the 28th of June 1978, the Academic Board would also consist of the University Librarian and Chairmen of departments. By 1997, membership of the Academic had extended to include the president, and education vice-president of Melbourne University Student Union Incorporated. It also included either the president of the University of Melbourne Postgraduate Association, or the president's nominee. In addition two members of the general staff were permitted to hold office for a term of two years. The terms of reference for the Board included the requirements to deliberate upon, and recommend policy with regard to appointments, university and faculty structure, assessment and academic departmental budgetary matters. Additionally, Board resolutions directly affecting students are made available to students on enrolment and re-enrolment. Since its inception in 1855 there are a significant number of committees that have answered to and joined with the Board. These include the Standing Committee on Research; Committee on Research and Graduate Studies; Joint Committee of Council and the Professorial Board / Joint Committee on Policy; Joint Committee of the Professorial Board and Heads of Colleges; and Joint Committee of the Professorial Board and Schools Board / Joint Matriculation Committee. Matters of the Board include, submissions and faculty recommendations of unsatisfactory progress of students; Board resolutions; Board endorsement of students; details of subjects; purchase of books; Library vote; matriculation examinations and changes to matriculation regulations; changes to faculty statutes; changes of name of graduates; reports, submissions and resolutions regarding the altering of regulations of scholarships and prizes; student quotas; Admissions Ad Eundem Statum; reports and submissions regarding transfers to other courses; establishment of chairs; senior academic appointments; working party reports; staff award restructuring; effective full time unit (EFTU) statistics; school leaver targets and regulation of selection and admission.Search records of this agent
