Agent TypeOrganisationActivities & OccupationsUniversity administrationHistoryOn 1 September 1913 the Council received a Report "represent- the views of members of the University interested in the proposal" to establish an Appointments Board similar to those of British and American universities. Statute XXXII (later 2.12) came into force as World War I was about to commence, and a large Board of University and other members was established. Required to keep a register of graduates and other past or present students with their qualifications and of employers seeking staff, and empowered to charge fees to cover working expenses, the Board appears to have been inactive for some years. In 1928 its membership was greatly reduced, but only after the appointment of an honorary Secretary (A.G. Whitlam, part-time lecturer in Marketing) in 1932 did the Board report a growing number of registrations and placements. On his resignation in late 1935 the position, now salaried, went to J.L. Gillespie, followed in August 1941 by H.F. Downes. The Board's functions were taken over by the Careers and Appointments Service, a department in the Registrar's Division (Statute 2.12, renamed 15 December 1981) until abolished in 1994.
