He worked for the Great Boulder Mine at Kalgoorlie and lectured in geology at the Western Australian School of Mines. In World War Two, Huntly was commissioned to study and practice meteorology by the Royal Australian Air Force, undertaking original research on frontal behaviour and katabatic winds. In 1945 he was Assistant Divisional Meteorologist for NSW. His main scientific research was undertaken in the field of paper physics at CSIRO becoming head of the Paper Physics section in 1953 and authoring and co-authoring over 180 papers. He was appointed Chief of the Division of Chemical Technology in 1979 and retired in 1982. Huntly was Chairman of the first South East Asian Regional Pugwash Conference in 1967 and the Australian contact for many years. He was a descendant of early settlers Georgiana and Andrew McCrae who arrived in Australia in 1841.
