Agent TypeOrganisationActivities & OccupationsUniversity DepartmentHistoryOne of a number of initiatives to promote the study of Asian languages and cultures, a Department of Oriental Studies was founded following the Myer Foundations' offer in 1959 of funding for this over a five to ten year period, the University to gradually assume responsibility for maintaining the Department. H.F. Simon, of the School of Oriental and African Studies, London, was appointed to the Chair in September 1960, and in 1962 commenced teaching Chinese (Japanese was offered in 1965). Teaching was intended to include the civilisations and particularly contemporary developments in China and Japan, and at the outset an interdisciplinary Centre of East Asian Studies offered such such courses. An amalgamation was arranged in 1970 with Indonesian and Studies, the new Department being named in 1971 East and Southeast Asian Studies. Again separate late in 1975, the former Oriental Studies became in 1976 the department of East Asian Studies. A short-lived School of Asian Languages (Chinese, Japanese, Indonesian and Indian) was formed in 1985. Further changes produced a Department of Asian Languages and Anthropology 1988-1992 and of Japanese and Chinese in 1993.
