Morris in 1884, and continued after his death in 1902 by Lecturer Fernand Maurice-Carton. A.R. Chisholm, appointed Lecturer in 1921, was appointed Associate Professor in 1932 and Professor in 1938. Ronald Francis Jackson succeeded Chisholm as Professor of French, serving from 1957 until 1976. Paul Canart and Frank Just were members of the Department from 1943 to 1974 and 1957 to 1974 respectively. In 1991 the French and Italian Departments were brought under one Chairman, each having a head of section. The Professor of French (C. Duckworth) having retired, the Chair was "frozen" for three years.
