In 1906 he took the new Chair of Pathology. In 1925 Peter MacCallum took up duty as Allen's successor. Edgar J.S. King occupied the Chair 1951-1966. A museum to contain pathological specimens was planned and commenced at the Melbourne Hospital, at the instigation and expense of the University, as a result of the efforts of Anthony Brownless. The museum was moved to the University in 1883.
