He was a sub-editor of the Cairns Post, transferring to the Melbourne Herald following his marriage in the 1930s. In 1942 he joined the Department of Information as a State Publicity Censor. At the end of World War II in 1945, he became the Director of Radio Australia, where he remained until 1950 when the functions of that agency were transferred to the Australian Broadcasting Committion. After 1950 he continued to work as a journalist, retiring in 1971
