Home was born in 1939 and educated at the University of Melbourne and Indiana University, where he gained his Ph.D. On his return to Australia he taught physics at Haileybury College from 1960 to 1964. At the University of Melbourne he became Lecturer in History and Philosophy of Science from 1967 to 1970 and later Senior Lecturer. In 1975 Home was appointed foundation Professor of History and Philosophy of Science, retiring in 2003. He is a prolific author of historical and scientific publications and the editor of "Historical Records of Australian Science" since 1984. He is also an Honorary Life Fellow of Museum Victoria, an Honorary Associate of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne and a Fellow, Australian Academy of the Humanities.
