Horne graduated B.A. (Hons) in 1934 and Dip.Ed. in 1935 at Melbourne, where he had studied since 1931, residing at the Melbourne Teachers' College. Invited by Professor Cowling to be a tutor in English he worked off his bond to the Education Department by teaching part-time at University High School before leaving to study at Oxford. After teaching at Queen's College, Belfast and the University of Leicester, he accepted the Chair of English at Adelaide in 1957. He retired in 1977.
