Agent TypeOrganisationActivities & OccupationsAccountantsHistoryJ. McAlister Howden joined the Melbourne accounting firm of Gowan and Lyell in 1868. In succeeding years, notably the land boom years of the 1880s, the firm was increasingly drawn into company flotation and land speculation, before being taken over in 1885 by B.J. Fink, reconstructed as Mercantile Finance Co. and becoming one of the spectacular failures of the 1890s. Both Howden and Lyell continued their involvement in the profession.Search records of this agent
