Letters and documents cover daily life, property and livestock management, births, deaths and marriages, matters of inheritance, and family strife, as well as recording hurricanes, droughts, and changes in social and economic conditions following the abolition of slavery in the region. Referencing violence, the impact of both World Wars on both England and the Caribbean, smallpox in Jamaica, the family's deteriorating relationships with servants and Jamaican people, fire and arson at Brumalia.
