He was admitted to the Victorian bar in 1922. He studied French in Grenoble during 1927-29 and undertook primary school training in Melbourne in 1931. In 1932 he began a teaching career at Melbourne Grammar. He was president of the Ship Lovers' Association and in 1950 sailed the world in Finnish barque teaching the crew English.
