Agent TypeOrganisationIdentifierUMA-AG-000000047Activities & OccupationsUniversity celebrationHistoryOn 17 March 1902 the Chancellor announced to the Council that the Jubilee of the University would occur on 22 January 1903, and inviting members to give early attention to the most suitable manner to celebrate the occasion. As the consequences of the Dickson defalcations unfolded, however, Council resolved to defer the celebration until 1905 [the year in which lectures commenced]. On 2 November 1903 further delay was proposed and on 1 August 1904 Council accepted Dr. Leeper's motion to appoint a committee to suggest the time and manner of celebration, members to be the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, President of the Professorial Board (H.B. Allen), the Rev. E.H. Sugden, J.W. Barrett and two other members of the Professorial Board, the Warden of the Senate (T.P. McInerney) and Leeper himself. W.Baldwin Spencer was to be Conveno Convenor and Organising Secretary. J. MacFarland joined in 1906. The Committee sought funds to proceed on 3 April 1905. Its minutes commence on 7 April. The celebrations, planned for late April 1906, included receptions for representatives of other Universities and distinguished individuals, dinners, student activities and a ball.
