Agent TypeOrganisationHistoryThe Centre, directed by E.K. Horwood, was formed by merging the Sciences Languages Department with the Experimental Language Laboratory in 1971. The former originated in the compulsory reading course in French and German taught from 1923 by W. von Dechend, Dorothea Coverlid and others (includng F. Loewe) from 1923 until 1944. Deciding that compulsory language instruction must be resumed, at least for M.Sc. and Ph.D. students, the Faculty of Science appointed E.K. Horwood as Lecturer in 1949. The Laboratory, commenced in 1962 under Professor R.F. Jackson (French) formed an important part of the Centre when it was established in the Arts Faculty, housed in the John Medley building.
