Hunt (known as P.C. Holmes Hunt) studied engineering and chemistry at Malvern College. He began work with the City of Birmingham Gas Works as Assistant to his father, became Superintendant of Works in 1899, and resigned in 1902 when appointed as Assistant Engineer to the Metropolitan Gas Company, Melbourne. Hunt took up duty with M.G.C. on 25 March 1903, and was appointed Engineer in October 1907. In August 1913 he resigned to take up several directorships, the chief being with the Colonial Gas Association Ltd. He was immediately made Chairman of the local Board of C.G.A., filling the vacancy left by George Swinburne. In 1922 he became Managing Director as well as Chairman. He visited London in 1923 to negotiate for the transfer of Head Office to Melbourne, effective from 1 January 1924. Hunt remained at the head of C.G.A. until his death on 6 May 1941. He was also a director of Mt. Lyell Mining and Railway Co., Wallaroo Mt. Lyell Fertilizers Ltd., Commonwealth Fertilizers and Chemicals Ltd., Crankless Engines Ltd. and other companies.
