Agent TypeOrganisationHistoryThe Bacteriology Laboratory in the Department of Pathology had been providing a bacteriological service for the Central Board of Health for some years when Professor Allen and Dr. D.A. Gresswell agreed through their organisations that the Laboratory would provide a diagnostic service in bacteriology and test the water supply in return for an annual payment. Its first Director was Thomas Cherry, later Professor Agriculture. The Laboratory has continued its public health work to the present day. It was renamed the Public Health Laboratory in 1929 and the Bacteriological Diagnostic Unit in 1963.
