UA306 "At a meeting of the Professorial Board, held on the 27th of November 1945, it was decided that a standing committee of the Board should be established to consider a new regulation governing the machinery and administration of the Ph.D degree. The initial role of the committee was to report to the Professorial Board and make recommendations on matters of student eligibility for entry to the Ph.D degree and the setting of student fees.

One of the Committee's first tasks was to design the rules and procedures for the admission of candidates taking into account the recommendations of faculties.

The Committee met every month, was chaired by the Chairman of the Academic Board or at some times by another member of the Academic Board. The Academic Secretary would be present at some meetings. Later, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) would be appointed a member of the Committee. Members were elected by the Professorial/Academic Board. After 1978, it was decided that three additional members be co-opted for two-year periods.

The Committee would deal with such issues as:

Conditions of candidature; Faculty requirements; Individual applications for candidature-including thesis topics and areas of research; Applications by students for leave; Applications by students for extensions; Examinations; Appointment of Examiners; Examination results and graduation; Membership of the Ph.D Committee; Recognition of outside institutions and research conducted outside the University; Supervision of candidates including supervisors' reports; Regulations regarding submission of theses; Progress of candidates; Individual applications for transfer to Ph.D from Master's Degree; Conditions of Acceptance-comparison with Monash University (1961); Deferrals of candidature; Review/Summary of candidatures; Regulations regarding full time and part time candidature; Consideration of minimum requirements and level of research experience; Summary of matters dealt with by the Secretary of Graduate Studies; Reports by the Committee on Research and Graduate Studies; Probation of candidates; Format and publication of theses; Applications (and procedures for dealing with) for special consideration; Higher education Policy Discussion Paper (Green Paper) by Honourable John Dawkins, MP (1987) included; Discussion regarding contents of ""Green paper"" - issues such as objectives of PhD degree, structure of degree, allocation of postgraduate scholarships, mobility of students, flexibility in structure of postgraduate programmes.

Proposed changes to PhD courses by faculties; Collaboration with outside bodies on PhD student supervision; Letters of application with accompanying letters of support by Heads and supervisors; Establishment of a prize for academic excellence as evidenced in a thesis; Procedures for dealing with applications by overseas students; Procedures for annual reports by PhD students."
