Initially called the Modern Bookshop, the name had changed to the International by 1934. George Ireland was first entrusted by the Party with establishing the Bookshop; Jack Morrison became manager in 1938, Kath Gleeson in 1970 and David Hudson in 1973. The Bookshop established other bookshops in Melbourne and Geelong in the 1970s. It was one of the most successful bookshops established by the CPA. When the Menzies government declared the CPA an illegal organisation in 1940 the shop was not closed down as it was not owned legally by the Party. It closed in 1993.
