Technical Colleges Board (The University of Melbourne)
Description
Agent TypeOrganisationHistoryThe Board was established in response to a desire that credit be given for advanced work done in technical colleges to students who sought to enter the University. In 1904 a joint committee of the Working Men's College and University was set up which on investigating course overlaps found some significant ones and proposed cooperation between the two bodies including exemptions in subjects where there was equivalence. Nothing eventuated from this, but in 1911 at the instance of the Education Department a Technical Schools Advisory Committee was formed of technical college and University representatives charged with recommending course remissions for diplomates entering the University. In October 1912 the University established the Technical Colleges Board to which colleges might apply for recognition, reporting on their staffing, equipment and courses and submitting to inspection by the Board. Matriculated diplomates from such colleges might apply for partial exemption. In August 1970 a Sub-Committee recommended that, in view of the Victoria Institute of Colleges' inspection system, the Board discontinue inspecting and disband. It formally ceased to exist in 1979.
