In 1949 she commenced her studies at the University of Melbourne where she completed a Bachelor of Arts, Diploma of Social Studies and Master of Social Work. She commenced working in the Social Studies Department at the University of Melbourne in 1958 as a sessional lecturer and then tutor before going on to become Lecturer and then Senior Lecturer from 1963-1996. During this time she was also employed as a social worker and then acting director at the Citizens Welfare Service and as a social worker at St Vincent's Hospital. In 1978 she undertook a field study in the United Kingdom, looking at social work referral in health and social services. During her career in social work she pursued interests in a variety of fields, the place and status of social workers in hospitals; discharge planning, elder abuse, the casemix system, the social work response to the aids epidemic and curriculum building. Her sabbatical in the United Sates from 1983-1985 allowed her to gain an understanding into social work in America and laid the ground work for her future involvement in programs of collaboration between Australia and the United States. Two of these programs were the Beth Israel Hospital Boston/Melbourne Hospital social work program and the Mount Sinai Medical Centre (NY) Leadership Enhancement Program. She was also involved in the development and creation of the International Conference on Social Work in Health and Mental Health, the second of which was held in Melbourne in January 1998. In 1999 she was granted Life Membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers and in 2009 awarded a Certificate of Appreciation by the Australian Association of Social Workers Victorian Branch for her contribution to the Mount Sinai Leadership Enhancement Program. A quiet social work leader over a period spanning forty years, her most significant contribution to the profession has been her role as a catalyst in developing opportunities for international collaboration and professional exchange for Australian social workers, especially those in health and mental health through the 1980s and 1990s.
