Further specialisation occurred when Harry Brookes Allen was appointed Professor of Descriptive and Surgical Anatomy in 1882. The Chair was further divided when Richard James Arthur Berry was appointed Professor of Anatomy in 1905. Berry was followed by Frederic Wood Jones (1930), Sydney Sunderland (1937), Leslie John Ray (1961) and Ian Darian-Smith (1983). The Department was the first in Medicine to have its own building before WWII and was active in teaching and research. It became the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology in 1993 and the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience in 2012.
