This lead to work at the Physics Department, Imperial College on the National Bubble Chamber Project, which was to display high energy particles in cosmic rays. He later undertook work in India under the Colombo Plan setting up an optical workshop at the Indian Institute of Technology and training technicians in optical Techniques. In 1965 he returned to Australia to work at the Physics Department, University of Tasmania where he made its 16 inch telescope. In 1968 he started his own company, James Optics, which was to manufacture various optical including the Prime Focus Corrector Lenses for the for the Anglo Australian Telescope at Siding Springs and the reflectors made for an Optus AUSSAT B satelite.
