1.1 To consider ethical implications of proposed research projects conducted on human subjects in the University, and to certify with respect to those projects whether they satisfy accepted ethical standards and codes in terms of safeguards for the well-being of the subjects of the experiments, having regard to the general principles set out in 3.6 below.
1.2 To report to Council
1.3 To establish procedures for the evaluation and certification of all proposals for the conduct of experiments on human subjects in the University.
1.4 To ensure that human experimentation is not being conducted in the University without the appropriate certificate of the Committee.

2. Membership
2.1 A Deputy Vice Chancellor - who would ordinarily be Chairman
2.2 The Dean of Medicine or his nominee
2.3 The Registrar or his nominee
2.4 The Chairman of the Academic Board or his nominee
2.5 Up to five persons appointed annually by Council (after receiving advice from the Committee) not necessarily members of Council, of whom at least 2 shall belay persons with respect to scientific human experimentation
2.6 The lay membership of the Committee shall include both sexes
2.7 The Committee will appoint a Deputy Chairman from among its members.
