Property and Campus Services (University of Melbourne)
Description
Agent TypeOrganisationIdentifierUMA-AG-000000123Activities & OccupationsUniversity DepartmentHistoryAfter its inception in 1853 the University of Melbourne employed a range of people to maintain its buildings, the first being the University Porter. People working in positions to keep the University functioning - from gardeners and curators of grounds, charwomen, bell ringers and builders - reported to the Registrar. As the University grew it became necessary to appoint a Clerk of Works in 1937 and a Buildings Officer/Controller in 1953.
When the Buildings and Maintenance Branch was created in 1964 to consolidate work on the property of the University, the activities carried out by it were managed through a variety of structures. In 1966 it became the Buildings and Properties Branch, and the Staff Engineer and Staff Architect had separate departments until 1968. In 1974 it became the Projects and Maintenance Branch, separated from the Property and Accounting Branch. In 1977 it became Building, Grounds and Services; and in 1984, Buildings, Property and Services. The sections of Buildings, Property and Services in 1984 show the range of its responsibilities: Risk Management and Accounting section; Physical Safety and Radiation Protection Unit; Energy Management Section; Engineering Section; Projects and Maintenance Section; Property Section.
In 1986, the name changed to Property and Buildings which it retained until 2006 even though its internal structure and the services it carried out continued to change and grow, for example, adding Computer Services in 1994. In April 1997 Property and Buildings divided into two areas: Property Planning and Development, and Property Services. Property Planning and Development reported to the Director of Financial Operations. It consisted of Administration Services, Architecture Property and Planning Services, Engineering Services and Design and Construction Services.
In May 2006, Property and Buildings was renamed Property and Campus Services to more accurately reflect its organisational functions. In 2014, it became Infrastructure Services as part of the University Services Division.Search records of this agent
