Married to Russian expatriate painter and sculptor Danila Vassilieff from 1947 til 1954, she was herself a recognized artist, active during a key period of Australian Modernist art holding membership with Contemporary Arts Society and frequently visiting at Heide. An associate editor of MEANJIN, were she was often published, Vassilieff was an energetic activist and writer. In the 1950's she was in attendance at various peace conferences, travelling to Europe and Asia, later publishing accounts of her experiences in Peking - Moscow letters: About a Four-months' Journey, to and from Vienna, by Way of People's China and the Soviet Union.
