Agent TypeOrganisationHistoryFrom 1964 successive Australian governments attempted, in most cases successfully, to conscript Australian males into the armed forces to fight with the U.S. in Vietnam. From the beginning there was a vociferous oposition to conscription, by conscripts in the forms of conscientious objection and illegal resistance, and by pressure groups such as Save Our Sons and Students for a Democratic Society. In 1970, C.I.C.D. and Jim Cairns organised several moratorium marches, of which the biggest in Melbourne was the first, held on Friday 8 June 1970. To everyone's surprise, 100,000 people peacefully protested in the main streets of the city.
