IdentifierUMA-SR-000002128Extent89 itemsScope and ContentProfessor Burke used exercise books for many purposes: to take notes on texts he read, to record his experiences and thoughts, to plan and draft his lectures and articles, to keep track of people, create bibliographies, or organize his shopping. These books were rarely dated, although some can be placed at the end of his life by the deterioration in his handwriting. Some were used for different purposed over several years and the labelling on the front of these books is often crossed out and written over, making it difficult to assign a title. Alphanumeric lettering on some of exercise books show that Professor Burke arranged and classified them at some stage, but it is difficult to relate them to the classification scheme indexes which he left and often revised. His classifications are added at the end of each description in square brackets, e.g., [A1].ArrangementThis series has been arranged in rough chronological order where possible, with books for which dates could not be identified located throughout.
