After completing his M.A., Wallace returned to Aberdeen University in 1907 where he lectured in English. In 1912 he was appointed Professor of English Lang. and Lit. until 1917 when Wallace served with the AIF. In 1919 he was briefly the Superintendent of Studies at the AIF Education Service Australian Corps Central School. After its closure in 1919, Wallace returned to Melbourne University and remained Professor until 1927. In the following year Wallace was appointed Chancellor at Sydney University was also the Chief Censor of Cinema Films and a member of the ABC.
